Natural Watercolors Palette

$95.00

This tin holds 12 half pans of individually crafted, natural-pigment watercolor paints. Each lake pigment takes 1–2 weeks to create: I start with the leftover dye-bath liquid and transform this into a lake pigment. Then, I grind the dried pigment and hand-mull it with a binder made from gum arabic, honey, glycerin, and distilled water. After pouring, the paint cures in its pan for up to 48 hours. The same careful hand-mulling process is used for colors derived from earth pigments.

Pan levels may vary, as each pigment’s unique composition affects how much it contracts while curing. Because these are delicate, naturally sourced colors, factors such as your water’s pH or treated papers may alter their hue. Some pigments have more texture than others. Some pigments are less lightfast than others and may fade with long-term light exposure. If that’s a concern, be sure to keep finished artwork out of direct sunlight.
